I feel like an imposter here because I’m part of Marvelous Designer’s internal design team. That said, long before I joined the company, I was already a strong believer in the software.I have over 10 years of experience in CGI, with more than six years of that spent using Marvelous Designer as a core part of my workflow. My background is in CGI advertising and automotive visualization, while my personal passion lies in creating animated short films and video games.Throughout my career, Marvelous Designer has consistently been one of the tools that has had the biggest impact on both the quality and speed of my work.<h1>Please introduce your project.</h1>The project I’ll be talking about today is a character inspired by Bhoota Kola, one of India’s many traditional ritual practices. The ritual also served as the central theme of the critically acclaimed Indian film Kantara.My goal was to create a photoreal digital replica of the performer that could be optimized for both film and game production. Beyond recreating the visual appearance, I wanted to capture the richness and authenticity of the costume while maintaining production-ready efficiency.<h1>Tell us how Marvelous Designer creates value in this project.</h1>Character creation is a highly complex process. Sculpting every element by hand requires significant time, technical skill, and a deep understanding of form design. Realistic garments add another layer of complexity, and once the assets are created, they still need to be retopologized and UV-mapped before they become practical for film or game production.For me, Marvelous Designer replaces much of the highly skilled craftsmanship involved in creating dimensional forms with the more structured and intuitive principles of garment design. That shift alone dramatically accelerates the process.<img src="https://storagefiles.clo-set.com/public/community/202606/72aaae299f0a41c6b102f152cadf78a1/images/dddd4953699b4e42a4a602bf6b942e9fArtboard%202.jpg" alt="dddd4953699b4e42a4a602bf6b942e9f" class="custom-image original-size" data-id="dddd4953699b4e42a4a602bf6b942e9f" data-width="1857" data-height="839">This project involved a large number of layered garments, and Marvelous Designer handled them exceptionally well. It remains the most natural and lifelike way I know of creating digital clothing.The integrated retopology and UV workflow saved a tremendous amount of time and allowed me to add levels of detail that would have been difficult to achieve otherwise.I also wanted to experiment with creating traditional flower garlands inside Marvelous Designer. The solution I arrived at was surprisingly simple but extremely effective. I created a tileable 3D pattern and used it as a button asset without enabling button simulation. This produced a visually rich garland that remained lightweight and efficient.The straw skirt followed a similar philosophy. While it appears highly detailed, it was built from a single simulated strand setup that was duplicated and arranged repeatedly. Called <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j14YXtGmwbw">In the dark</a>, The film was well received at several film events and earned multiple screenings, which was incredibly rewarding as an independent creator. <div data-youtube-video="" style="padding:56.25% 0 0 0; position:relative;"><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/j14YXtGmwbw?start=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" width="800" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" style="position:absolute; top:0; left:0; width:100%; height:100%;"></iframe></div>Both projects reinforced how valuable Marvelous Designer can be, not only for character work but also for storytelling.<h1>What is your favorite feature or tool to use in Marvelous Designer?</h1>The Retopology and UV Mapping tools are an easy choice for me.They make the transition from high-resolution assets to production-ready meshes incredibly intuitive. Being able to handle retopology and UVs directly within the same workflow saves time, reduces friction, and makes transferring detail from high-poly meshes much more efficient.<h1>For other users considering Marvelous Designer, do you have any advice or experience to share?</h1>Two tips completely changed the way I work:Think in layers. Approach your garments the same way you would approach a traditional painting. Focus on the large forms first, then gradually build detail. As sections are completed, freeze them and continue refining the next layer. This keeps simulations stable and the workflow manageable.Use cloth simulation, even if it’s subtle. If you’re creating animated films, adding even a simple cloth simulation can bring a surprising amount of life and realism to a character. As a bonus, natural cloth movement can often help mask small imperfections in animation.

The style is also inspired by the current trends of Jean Jacket, juicy makeup and bob hair.<h1>A Workflow For Swan</h1>1) Face Modelling in ZbrushFirstly, the model’s face was made in ZBrush. What is Marvelous Designer's strong point?&nbsp;&nbsp;</h1>About 4 years ago I was looking for a really good solution for creating clothing.Time constraints and having to manually sculpt clothing just wasn’t a viable option for me.&nbsp;My only option at the time was sculpting clothing from scratch in ZBrush.Sculpting every single fold and crease was driving me insane. I have so much respect for artists that can sculpt clothing.&nbsp;I searched online and found a solution to my problem in the form of cloth simulation and that program was Marvelous Designer.It not only allowed me to work faster but the results it generated blew my mind the first time I used it.The ability to draft a pattern in a 3D program and see it drape on a digital human to generate realistic looking clothing with folds and creases was revolutionary!At the time, finding learning material online was extremely rare so I had to resort to watching YouTube&nbsp;videos of real fashion designers sewing clothing in order to understand how garments are created.I still follow this same approach to this day to understand how to draft 2D patterns and sew garments, it has helped me so much.I feel like the amount of learning material provided for Marvelous Designer today is growing steadily and I made it my duty a couple years ago to record tutorials for Marvelous Designer and put them on YouTube&nbsp;to show everyone how Marvelous Designer could save them so much time to create garments.I still upload Marvelous Designer tutorials on my channel and I have so much content in development.Marvelous Designer has become my go to solution for doing anything cloth related. I’ve used it to create a countless number of outfits.It’s perfect for fashion design but I’ve&nbsp;also used it for environmental props like curtains, bedsheets and pillows.&nbsp;Marvelous Designers strong point is speed, customization of garments, accuracy of folds/creases and the ability to iterate and change aspects of a garment with ease, it’s a completely non destructive process and it has become the industry standard.&nbsp;<h1>3. What inspired you to choose Tuxingsun from the Chinese literature Investiture of the Gods as your project?</h1>Since the beginning of my career, I've been following <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.artstation.com/tianhuaxu">Xu Tianhua</a> and <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.artstation.com/yangqi917">Yang Qi</a>. Their work is a great inspiration for me. "Tuxingsun" concept made by Xu Tianhua, always caught my attention with his little body and unique face features. At the research stage, to know more about the backstory of the character, I found John Zhu's Chinese Lore Podcast, where he retells classic Chinese literature in English, and I fell in love with it. China has a millenary culture, which has many of the biggest inventions in the humankind history, and I'm very interested to know more, especially about their art.<img src="https://storagefiles.clo-set.com/public/community/202412/1f7f0a3eddcf49d0bf364a01d959c66e/images/2d3da966582b434784dd157086d20d2f1_mendy-bm-Tuxingsun.jpg" class="custom-image original-size" data-id="2d3da966582b434784dd157086d20d2f" data-width="2048" data-height="2048"><h1>How did Marvelous Designer assist you in realizing the vision for Tuxingsun's costume? Did you use any specific features or techniques that helped bring authenticity to the fabric and clothing design?</h1>I started the Tuxingsun project to familiarize myself with Marvelous Designer and I found incredible the possibility to work with sewing patterns, like is done in real-life cloth industry. Also, being able to work on the 2D pattern window and see the changes in real time, at the 3D window, is something extremely handy and powerful for recreating cloth designs. Additionally, there are a great number of fabric presets available, experimenting with it is so important to bring authenticity to the fabric, as well as finding the right pattern for it.<img src="https://storagefiles.clo-set.com/public/community/202412/1f7f0a3eddcf49d0bf364a01d959c66e/images/152355aa363e4e66b69ef467e385827cTx_mendy-bm-camisa2.jpg" class="custom-image original-size" data-id="152355aa363e4e66b69ef467e385827c" data-width="1920" data-height="1920"><img src="https://storagefiles.clo-set.com/public/community/202412/1f7f0a3eddcf49d0bf364a01d959c66e/images/aa8be76704134d2b83b764b1fa19a134Tx_mendy-bm-pano1.jpg" class="custom-image original-size" data-id="aa8be76704134d2b83b764b1fa19a134" data-width="1920" data-height="1920"><img src="https://storagefiles.clo-set.com/public/community/202412/1f7f0a3eddcf49d0bf364a01d959c66e/images/8014037f03ee4f9db2e546bbb932a485Tx_mendy-bm-front.jpg" class="custom-image original-size" data-id="8014037f03ee4f9db2e546bbb932a485" data-width="1920" data-height="1920"><h1>Can you give us a quick overview of the different tools used in your pipeline?</h1>When I start a project, I spend a good amount of time finding good references, then, I use PureRef to make the reference board, selecting just a few images on each topic.<img src="https://storagefiles.clo-set.com/public/community/202412/1f7f0a3eddcf49d0bf364a01d959c66e/images/aa7777cfe41e41869d56b0a7041ec0a84_PureRef_Tuxingsun.jpg" class="custom-image original-size" data-id="aa7777cfe41e41869d56b0a7041ec0a8" data-width="1478" data-height="942">After that, I go to Zbrush, to sculpt the character's and prop's basic shapes, with all my attention on proportions and silhouette. On personal projects, at this stage, I make pauses every now and then, to rest the eyes and be able to see clearer the results I'm getting, furthermore I often use Krita to make "correction" drawings on screenshots of Zbrush.Once I got a result I'm happy with, I moved forward to create the garments at Marvelous Design, taking advantage of its incredible cloth simulation power. After that I returned to Zbrush, and created the high poly version of everything, refined some folds and added all the details.Following, I used 3D Max to create the low poly version of the character and then imported it on RizomUV to work on the UVs. Finally, on Adobe Substance Painter, imported the lowpoly, and did the bakes and textures for the whole character.For rendering and final testing, I tend to use Marmoset Toolbag and Unreal 5.<h1>What challenges did you face during the creation process, and how did you overcome them?</h1>For me it was the number of layers, making the garment without the pieces intersecting with each other was complicated and the "freeze" tool was very important to overcome this challenge. I had to freeze and unfreeze the cloth elements many times, going back and forward, activating the simulation to create the folds that I wanted, and simultaneously, trying to maintain the elements hierarchy.<img src="https://storagefiles.clo-set.com/public/community/202412/1f7f0a3eddcf49d0bf364a01d959c66e/images/d2786d02057c4077b7888f4f1663f2d55_Tuxingsun_steps.jpg" class="custom-image original-size" data-id="d2786d02057c4077b7888f4f1663f2d5" data-width="1478" data-height="942"><img src="https://storagefiles.clo-set.com/public/community/202412/1f7f0a3eddcf49d0bf364a01d959c66e/images/21c4cbc7118945b1919b48da2a28a50f5_marvelous_capture2.jpg" class="custom-image original-size" data-id="21c4cbc7118945b1919b48da2a28a50f" data-width="1920" data-height="960"><img src="https://storagefiles.clo-set.com/public/community/202412/1f7f0a3eddcf49d0bf364a01d959c66e/images/fdd29bc8a6c1444983e819de713f3f625_marvelous_capture1.JPG" class="custom-image original-size" data-id="fdd29bc8a6c1444983e819de713f3f62" data-width="1920" data-height="960">Also, when I created the patterns, the cloth was small on Tuxingsun's body. Because of that, I had to "add more fabric" and this broke the hierarchy. So to avoid this, when I started over, I used a high particle distance to get the shapes, then I changed to a lower value and used many pins to simulate it and create the desired folds again.In summary, to maintain the hierarchy, the freeze and unfreeze features, in conjunction with the pins, were my best friends in this project. This was the most time-consuming part of the work.<h1>Are there any tips and tricks with Marvelous Designer that you can share with the community?</h1>The first tip: take your time to find patterns, this will save you a lot of time. Even though it's difficult and frustrating to find patterns on the internet, humans have started to create garments since ancient times; take the time to find them. Second tip: don't forget to use symmetry.<img src="https://storagefiles.clo-set.com/public/community/202412/1f7f0a3eddcf49d0bf364a01d959c66e/images/35f034d2d9f14fbbb097bc6ee02364be6_Tuxingsun%20process_translucent.jpg" class="custom-image original-size" data-id="35f034d2d9f14fbbb097bc6ee02364be" data-width="1920" data-height="960">Third: when you have as many pins as I had, the translucent mode is very useful. In addition, more a feature than a trick, use the soft body simulation, it's an incredible feature that considers the elastic aspect of the skin.<h1>How can you describe your overall experience of the use of the Marvelous Designer?</h1>It's amazing, the software is very intuitive, and the interface is truly user-friendly.
