I have been using CLO3D since fashion school and continued to learn to design with Marvelous Designer.</p><p>With my participation in the Creator’s contest 2025 Vol.3, I wanted to create a design that combines elegance and movement while also experimenting with fabrics. Through the contest, I learned a lot about visualizing textures, the effect of draping and also how to simulate complex layers.</p><hr><h1><strong>We’d like to hear more about the art direction in your Creator’s contest 2025 Vol.3. The layered textures and flowing details evoke the romantic opulence of Victorian and Edwardian fashion, while reinterpreting it in a contemporary and sculptural way.</p><p>I wanted to create a balance between heavy, structured fabric and light, almost floating material. I deliberately kept the color palette muted so that the textures and draping would take center stage.</p><p>I also wanted the movement of the fabric to emphasize the character's free spirit and playful personality.</p><p><img src="https://storagefiles.clo-set.com/public/marketplace/202509/70d356bef9f94388a84760b93a41df86/thumbnail/FANTASY-ARCHIVES_CONTEST_LOOK-01%20-%20Kopie1_21.png?resize=1&amp;f=webp&amp;w=1200&amp;fit=scale-down" alt="3D FANTASY-ARCHIVES_CONTEST_LOOK-01 Model" class="custom-image original-size"></p><hr><h1><strong>Would you be able to give us a quick overview of the different tools you use in your pipeline with a focus on Marvelous Designer? <br>Have you encountered any challenges and how have you overcome them?</strong></h1><p>After visualizing my first ideas onto paper, I use Marvelous Designer to translate my first ideas into 3D. For looks with several pieces like here I usually start with the very bottom layer, which in that case was the floor-long lace skirt and the easiest piece to create in this look. By using the Polygon tool I could easily create the front and back pieces of the garment.</p><p><img src="https://storagefiles.clo-set.com/public/community/202602/d40b0d05aaa34aa2b2eb3b0b6199b440/images/53bcb3e9bab0487a8ddc94e5447c505901.png" alt="53bcb3e9bab0487a8ddc94e5447c5059" class="custom-image original-size" data-id="53bcb3e9bab0487a8ddc94e5447c5059" data-width="1381" data-height="1891"></p><p>Continuing with the dress I had to use a different method for the bodice in order to make it look tailor-made. I used the 3D pen to draw on the avatar and then use the flatten tool to transfer the lines on the avatar into an actual 2D pattern. For this I used the ellipse tool to create the outlines and the internal ellipse tool to create the hole where the bodice is later being attached.</p><p><img src="https://storagefiles.clo-set.com/public/community/202602/d40b0d05aaa34aa2b2eb3b0b6199b440/images/9c71437ca9dc43ef906f6ec999de6db204.png" alt="9c71437ca9dc43ef906f6ec999de6db2" class="custom-image original-size" data-id="9c71437ca9dc43ef906f6ec999de6db2" data-width="2785" data-height="1888"></p><p>For the lace details at the hem I simply created long panels of fabric to sew them around the hem.</p><p><img src="https://storagefiles.clo-set.com/public/community/202602/d40b0d05aaa34aa2b2eb3b0b6199b440/images/507ec2f2d73d457987fba2baca45366405.png" alt="507ec2f2d73d457987fba2baca453664" class="custom-image original-size" data-id="507ec2f2d73d457987fba2baca453664" data-width="2779" data-height="1893"></p><p>The Blouse was my favourite thing to create in this look. I started by creating almost Kimono-like sleeves by using the Polygon tool. After adjusting the size and length through testing and fitting in the 3D window, I could finally start experimenting with the ruffles along the sleeves. The look was supposed to feel playful and free. Therefore I wanted to create a garment that flows with the avatars movements naturally. I tried to achieve that by creating large circles for the ruffles. Their circumference reaches from one sleeve hem to the other and even beyond.</p><p><img src="https://storagefiles.clo-set.com/public/community/202602/d40b0d05aaa34aa2b2eb3b0b6199b440/images/9c9fdc393761459687d8224c216fa2aa06.png" alt="9c9fdc393761459687d8224c216fa2aa" class="custom-image original-size" data-id="9c9fdc393761459687d8224c216fa2aa" data-width="2778" data-height="1888"></p><p>The biggest challenge I encountered with this look was harmonizing the many layers and their very different properties. The way I worked around that was to try and focus on only one garment at a time. In order to make the different garments harmonize with each other it was very important to give each of them the chance to properly simulate before putting it all together. The freeze function was my best friend for that specific case. And also never forget to give the garments different layers!</p><p><img src="https://storagefiles.clo-set.com/public/community/202602/d40b0d05aaa34aa2b2eb3b0b6199b440/images/fe09fb9ef80e4ec397fc51b36d0442f107.png" alt="fe09fb9ef80e4ec397fc51b36d0442f1" class="custom-image original-size" data-id="fe09fb9ef80e4ec397fc51b36d0442f1" data-width="2770" data-height="1888"></p><p>After finishing the whole look in Marvelous Designer I moved on with CLO3D to choose and render the perfect fabrics. It was a lot about exploring and experimenting to see what fits the vibe and character the best. I experimented with transparency, thickness, texture and other properties until I finally found the perfect fit for each garment.</p><p>I truly loved how spontaneous and experimental I could be with this contest. Start with the base, then add the ruffles. It can take time and a lot of patience when you have to readjust single areas to make the movement look natural.</p><p>But most importantly: have fun! Experiment with fabrics, explore different draping techniques and don’t be afraid to ‘ruin’ anything! Every look or piece of art you see is the outcome of experimenting and finding out along the way.</p><hr>

I studied animation at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts and now spend way too much time in front of the screen bringing ideas to life. I specialize in character animation, rigging, and blending 2D and 3D styles. I've worked as a senior animator on a variety of projects, including shorts, games, music videos and experimental works.<br><br>Next to my freelance gigs, I work on personal projects to improve my skills and experiment with ideas. At the moment I am working on a mixed media passion piece with my friend Boris, where we try to create something bigger than before. You can find our collaborative work on <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.instagram.com/boniisscared/"><u>Instagram</u></a>.</p><h1><strong>Why did you decide to use Marvelous Designer? How did it help you serve art direction?</strong></h1><p>Since my first animations, I’ve been interested in cloth simulations, because it helps root the characters in a physically accurate world. I tried different software to do cloth simulations, but they all behaved weirdly and were super unstable. When I tried Marvelous Designer for the first time back in 2022, I was just in awe. The fact that I could just play the simulation with its default settings and the garment came to a halt after a few frames was incredible.<br></p><div data-vimeo-video="" style="padding:56.25% 0 0 0; position:relative;"><iframe src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/810167885?#t=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" width="800" allow="autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write" style="position:absolute; top:0; left:0; width:100%; height:100%;"></iframe></div><p><br>My first finished piece using Marvelous Designer was a dance animation. I worked with pushed perspectives, snappy movements, and stylized posing. It was clear from the beginning that I wanted the main character to wear a jacket to have some nice secondary action and to add physicality. In the animation process I didn’t want to restrict myself, so I just ignored the cloth simulation and pushed the character performance as I wanted.</p><div data-vimeo-video="" style="padding:56.25% 0 0 0; position:relative;"><iframe src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/1156820388?#t=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" width="800" allow="autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write" style="position:absolute; top:0; left:0; width:100%; height:100%;"></iframe></div><p></p><h1><strong>How did you use Marvelous Designer in the artwork?</strong></h1><p>After finishing the character animation, I faced different challenges in simulating the jacket. One was the big and snappy movements. Marvelous Designer could handle those jumps of the character very well, but the simulation was too nervous and distracting. To make it calmer, I made heavy use of the Scene Time Warp function. At first, I thought I would need to rig the jacket for this shot, but before I did that, I wanted to try having him actually grab the cloth and simulate it. And it worked. I just had to do a little back and forth to get the fingers in the right place and increase the friction so the collar stuck to the fingers while grabbing. For VVV I used Blender, Substance Painter, Marvelous Designer, and Davinci Resolve. But I encourage everyone to always try new tools and stay flexible. In an actual production, it is very useful if you are able to adjust to new situations and don’t rely only on specific tools. One piece I’d like to share is the wind simulation I did with Taru. If you want to learn something new, I encourage you to come up with a small, simple project and just dive in. True to the motto: Just make it exist first. You can do it better later.<br><br>I have two tricks I’d like to share when it comes to animated characters in Marvelous Designer.<br><br><strong>Use of Scene Time Warp:</strong><br><br><img src="https://storagefiles.clo-set.com/public/community/202601/de446365090e4cef95fa21971084eb6c/images/e2aab2ed9ae64a75a1c363cd3a5fe65eSceneTimeWarp.png" alt="e2aab2ed9ae64a75a1c363cd3a5fe65e" class="custom-image original-size" data-id="e2aab2ed9ae64a75a1c363cd3a5fe65e" data-width="315" data-height="281"></p><p>If you have fast moving characters and snappy animations, the Scene Time Warp is very useful to stylize and simplify your simulations. If you set it to 5, your animated character moves 5 times slower, meaning your cloth simulation is also 5 times slower.<br><br>You then can record your simulation and set the Time Warp back to 1. The animation and simulation will then play in real time, but because it was recorded in slow motion, the simulation is calmer and kind of simplified.</p><p></p><p><strong>Working with Layers:</strong><br>When you work with longer shots, it can stabilize your process if you use multiple layers. This way, you can simulate different layers for different parts in the shot. Some can be simulated in real time and others in slow motion. You can cut and trim the layers after recording to find the right spot for the switch. You can check the video above where I recorded this workflow.&nbsp;</p>
