The Silence (2025), Liwia Labuz - Stage V: The SilenceThe Silence marks the final transformation - a chilling metaphor for the complete erasure of individuality. Inspired by the tragic life of Rosemary Kennedy, this stage reflects the ways society continues to silence and marginalize those who deviate from its rigid expectations. Kennedy, lobotomized to ensure compliance, became a living symbol of control at the expense of humanity. The upcycled wedding dress in the garment echoes the oppressive traditions tied to gender roles. Weddings, often celebrated as a pinnacle of societal expectations, can serve as a symbol of a woman’s “completion” in the eyes of society. By repurposing a wedding gown, this stage critiques how women are stripped of their autonomy to fit into prescribed roles - sacrificing their desires, voices, and identities in the name of tradition, beauty, or propriety. This stage also draws on contemporary parallels. Social media, for example, perpetuates the idealization of polished, curated lives while eroding individuality. Women are pressured to fit into flawless, doll-like molds; silent, beautiful, and uncontroversial - fueling an endless cycle of conformity and erasure.The Silence is not just a look, it's a question:How many women have been silenced in the name of tradition, beauty, or compliance?
