Once a graduate of Tama Art University's Department of Graphic Design, and currently a lecturer, he builds boldly colored figures whose garments feel both impossible and convincingly real.</h2> Working with Marvelous Designer, Cinema 4D, and ZBrush, Kota uses cloth simulation to chase a kind of realism that pure sculpting can't easily reach. After graduating from the Department of Graphic Design at Tama Art University, I began creating illustration and moving-image work using 3DCG. I currently also teach 3DCG as a part-time lecturer at Tama Art University. Tell us how you got into art and creation, and how you came to teach CG at Tama Art University. How do you see the potential of 3DCG within art? Since I went to an art university to begin with, if you think of "creation" in the broadest sense, my first real starting point was probably preparing for the art school entrance exams. But when it comes to digital art specifically, the trigger was learning 3DCG software during my university years. 3DCG isn't limited to digital media—it can be applied physically as well, through things like 3D printing, so I think there are all kinds of ways to make use of it. As for how I ended up teaching, a professor from my student days suddenly got in touch with me. Can you tell us about the moment you felt, "This is something I can use for my own work"?What got me started was seeing the WIP (work-in-progress) posts of an artist I admire and noticing that Marvelous Designer was part of their workflow. In a pipeline that combines Cinema 4D and ZBrush, at what point do you reach for Marvelous Designer? Where do you feel it does something the other tools simply can't replace?I mostly use it to create clothing for characters. Realistic garment expression really is something only simulation can deliver. Music, fashion, everyday scenery—what tends to be the starting point for your work?I'm influenced by so many different things that it's hard to narrow it down to any single one. I get the sense that my final inspiration comes from an abstracted, almost unspeakable space where all of those things mix together.When you make digital clothing, are you conscious of the physical constraints of real garments—gravity, material, stitching? Or do you enjoy deliberately freeing yourself from those constraints?When making something digital, I think it often becomes more interesting if you ignore those constraints. I'm curious about what kind of technical progress might emerge on the efficiency side—things like the extensibility of materials, or cutting out the labor of physically cutting fabric. Hi Clo-team,the colour map used to be adjustable by entering numbers. but after the latest update, i found out there's prob with this feature. idk what happened. i literally didnt change any settings after the update. ive tried the feature in some old files as well. some can work, some cant. ive never encountered this issue before. aint rly got no clue. ive also reinstalled. it became normal at the point. then i thought it was fixed. the next week i opened the file and just to realise this feature somehow became dysfunctional again. could u pls suggest anything i could check first? The core task was to express a sense of motion synced to 120bpm music, which I chose to interpret through the theme of DJing. I wanted to make the visuals more engaging by integrating traditional Korean elements. While the character wears a Hahoe mask (a traditional Korean mask) to highlight cultural roots, I also needed to convey a streetwear aesthetic that fits a modern DJ. However, as long as you know which patterns connect to which parts, this feature allows for a fast and intuitive workflow, which is a massive help in saving production time.Second is the ‘Attach to Measure (Avatar)’ feature. Although I didn’t use it for this specific project, it is incredibly useful for securing garments to the character. For example, simulations can sometimes become unstable when fabric is tucked inside shoes; in such cases, I use this tool to pin the cloth to the ankle area for stability. It’s also great for scenes with hanging fabrics, like curtains, where the support structure isn't visible in the camera frame. Could you share a bit about your latest work, 'Girl Student'?</h1>Hello, this is Bora Kim, and I'm delighted to be back. This time, the theme of my artwork is a girl sitting in a classroom after school. The idea began with a simple desire to create a character in a school uniform. I initially considered settings like a playground or park, but ultimately, I chose a classroom for its deeper sense of nostalgia and memories.<h1>I understand that you're currently working as a character modeler, and with each piece, the background and prop details seem to be becoming more intricate. As the backgrounds become more detailed, they also encourage viewers to imagine the story behind the character. I'm curious if this is an intentional approach—do you work with the idea of how you'd like the audience to imagine the character's story?</h1>I believe many people have experienced the quietness of school after classes, the sense of relief after a day's work, and the anticipation for tomorrow. For the background, I emphasized recreating elements based on relatable memories, such as the wooden floor, curtains, fluorescent lights, wall colors, and the marble beneath the windows.<img src="https://storagefiles.clo-set.com/public/community/202412/cc0033acedaa434fa1a41d1dfb90da93/images/219fa3f1a90e46b8acc731d4d7fab0db6.jpg" class="custom-image original-size" data-id="219fa3f1a90e46b8acc731d4d7fab0db" data-width="3898" data-height="4722"><img src="https://storagefiles.clo-set.com/public/community/202412/cc0033acedaa434fa1a41d1dfb90da93/images/01f177a557944b8580ff9f8b50e50862%E5%A5%B3%E5%AD%A6%E7%94%9F2.jpg" class="custom-image original-size" data-id="01f177a557944b8580ff9f8b50e50862" data-width="3840" data-height="2440"><h1>I'm curious to know which parts of your work were created using Marvelous Designer？</h1>I used Marvelous Designer for all aspects involving fabric, such as the character’s school uniform, ribbon, hoodie, hair tie, and even the clothes on the rabbit attached to the bag, as well as the curtains in the classroom. For the school uniform shirt, I started with a shirt from the Marvelous Designer library as the base, fitted it to the character's body, and then created and matched the vest and skirt. To form the pleats in the skirt, I drew lines for folds both inside and outside and adjusted the Fold Angle value to create the desired shape.<img src="https://storagefiles.clo-set.com/public/community/202412/cc0033acedaa434fa1a41d1dfb90da93/images/20798cdce0a64a1daf3689b4856ce3dc%E5%A5%B3%E5%AD%A6%E7%94%9F5.jpg" class="custom-image original-size" data-id="20798cdce0a64a1daf3689b4856ce3dc" data-width="2560" data-height="1399">The hoodie required creating a 2D pattern for the shoulders, arms, and underarms that was wider than expected to achieve the oversized fit. After completing the creation, I imported the rigged animation to set various poses. Finally, I fixed one side of the hoodie to drape off the shoulder, easing the restrictive feeling of the uniform.<img src="https://storagefiles.clo-set.com/public/community/202412/cc0033acedaa434fa1a41d1dfb90da93/images/f5167050129d4fdcb7099df763154d28%E5%A5%B3%E5%AD%A6%E7%94%9F6.jpg" class="custom-image original-size" data-id="f5167050129d4fdcb7099df763154d28" data-width="2560" data-height="1399">For the curtains in the background, I first created a rod that would act as the avatar, then hung the fabric on it. Adjusting the width of the curtains made it easier to form the pleats. After that, I used the Wind Controller to simulate the effect of the thin fabric fluttering in the breeze from the window. This flexibility in correcting and exporting the folds is a significant strength. Additionally, I found it convenient to obtain a cleaned-up low-poly mesh through the ZBrush plugin.<h1>If there was an impressive story during the project, could you share it?</h1>During this project, due to personal circumstances, the working period was extended. As the seasons changed, I adjusted the school uniform design from summer to autumn attire, eventually adding a hoodie. I also changed the hairstyle from a ponytail to a half-up style, and finally to a bob cut. Although the work seemed never-ending at times, step by step, it eventually came together.
