I adjust stiffness, stretch, thickness, and pressure to simulate tension and structure — especially for technical or industrial-inspired pieces. I also rely heavily on modular workflows — building pieces in clean systems so I can control complexity without breaking realism. Clean bonding lines and stacking only work if everything underneath is technically solid.<hr>You are actively selling your assets on CONNECT. Creating a product for others to use must be different from creating personal art. What is your top priority when creating assets for sale?When I create assets for others, usability comes first. I create a lot of base shapes so they can be used in CLO projects. When you’re moving between countries, routines break easily — work hours shift, internet quality varies, energy levels change, and it’s on you to still deliver at a professional level no matter where you are.The upside is real freedom. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Hello there! I’m Sands Kopaei, Senior Character Artist working in the games industry. I have contributed to titles such as Apex Legends, Star Wars Jedi Survivor, Diablo Immortals, WWE 2K Series, to name a few. In these series of posts I will be going over how I utilize Marvelous Designer in my day to day workflow and specifically how I utilized Marvelous Designer in my latest personal project “Warrior of The East”, which you can view on my Artstation page here: <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.artstation.com/artwork/K3KYJr">https://www.artstation.com/artwork/K3KYJr</a> <img src="https://storagefiles.clo-set.com/public/community/202603/2cec1b9a37a94e95b85cf4b1916c6a44/images/b9650dd6b10d4ef480ae03be1be67869Main_Render_05_reduced.jpg" alt="b9650dd6b10d4ef480ae03be1be67869" class="custom-image original-size" data-id="b9650dd6b10d4ef480ae03be1be67869" data-width="3600" data-height="3600"> With introductions out of the way, let’s begin! In first part of this series I’m going to go over how I set up my MD scene, avatar and the specific MD tools and features I use. When working with characters in production or personal projects, almost always we have to build our garments for the designated bind pose. Each project will have a different bind pose suitable for its technical requirements. These bind poses can be a T-pose, A-pose. A-pose with elbow bent slightly, A pose with both knees and elbows bent or any other variation. While the bind pose streamlines workflows in production, they are almost never the best poses to simulate garments on. For example, you wouldn’t want to simulate a loose sleeve on a T-pose or A-pose where the fabric will sit on the upper bicep and the excess fabric drapes in the space between the body and the inner side of the arm. Fortunately, Marvelous Designer has features and tools to solve this problem. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; While it is perfectly viable to use static OBJ files as avatars and utilize morph targets for changing poses during your simulation, I highly advise starting out by creating a basic rig for your avatar and importing your avatar in as a FBX file with the skeleton intact. To do this, go to File Open Avatar. Below are the settings I use : <img src="https://storagefiles.clo-set.com/public/community/202603/2cec1b9a37a94e95b85cf4b1916c6a44/images/51146d7485b5496d88a4ac8788f05cb9MD_avatar_import.jpg" alt="51146d7485b5496d88a4ac8788f05cb9" class="custom-image original-size" data-id="51146d7485b5496d88a4ac8788f05cb9" data-width="639" data-height="1562"> &nbsp; Ensure to set your unit size, I prefer to work in CM, however you may need to adjust this to your project’s units. Be sure that Auto Add Arrangements Points and Create Fitting are both checked. Once the avatar is loaded press Shift+X to toggle skeleton on /off. Always verify that the skeleton has imported correctly and test the rig by moving the arm and legs. Once satisfied, undo any changes you made to your pose. Before progressing, we are going to save the current pose -which should be your bind pose- to a pose file. File Save As Pose. Name your bind pose and save this in your project folder. As you see in the screenshot below, I have adjusted the pose to a more suitable arm position for the kind of sleeves I wanted to simulate. You may have noticed I have my forearm piece also loaded in as an additional avatar to use as collision object. To add additional avatars, use File Add Avatar. (In the next series I will be going over my pattern drafting process and how I go about making my garments.) <img src="https://storagefiles.clo-set.com/public/community/202603/2cec1b9a37a94e95b85cf4b1916c6a44/images/f1ce53ddd81f43459975a831556fec981.jpg" alt="f1ce53ddd81f43459975a831556fec98" class="custom-image original-size" data-id="f1ce53ddd81f43459975a831556fec98" data-width="3062" data-height="2057"> Once I finish a piece of garment in the pose I have created inside MD, I will need to have this garment with the current fold structure back in my bind pose. To do this we are going to use&nbsp; solidify feature first. Select all patterns you would like to maintain the folds and structure on, right-click on the pattern and select Solidify from the list. Solidify is a powerful MD feature that does a soft freeze on all the folds and structures of your garment during simulation. Now we will load the bind pose we saved earlier to shift this asset back to the original bind pose and prepare it for export to our sculpting software of choice. <img src="https://storagefiles.clo-set.com/public/community/202603/2cec1b9a37a94e95b85cf4b1916c6a44/images/b9c790f61ae44d4eb8152b0eed5f28d02.jpg" alt="b9c790f61ae44d4eb8152b0eed5f28d0" class="custom-image original-size" data-id="b9c790f61ae44d4eb8152b0eed5f28d0" data-width="2897" data-height="2084"> Click on File &gt; Open &gt; Pose and browse to where you saved your bind pose earlier. This will activate simulation mode and MD will start to morph the avatar and all the garments to your bind pose while maintaining the folds and general structure of the pieces you have solidified. <img src="https://storagefiles.clo-set.com/public/community/202603/2cec1b9a37a94e95b85cf4b1916c6a44/images/0b2525101b1847d0a9436f6209557b252.5_2.jpg" alt="0b2525101b1847d0a9436f6209557b25" class="custom-image original-size" data-id="0b2525101b1847d0a9436f6209557b25" data-width="2881" data-height="2068">Depending on your particle distance and PC specs, this process may take anywhere between a few seconds to a few minutes. Give MD’s simulation enough time to ensure the avatar and the garment are completely settled in your original bind pose. <img src="https://storagefiles.clo-set.com/public/community/202603/2cec1b9a37a94e95b85cf4b1916c6a44/images/c7c760ac7ab3419bad12a6cec82ebe763.jpg" alt="c7c760ac7ab3419bad12a6cec82ebe76" class="custom-image original-size" data-id="c7c760ac7ab3419bad12a6cec82ebe76" data-width="2895" data-height="2075">As you see above the garment and the avatar are back in the bind pose and all the folds and garment structure intact! This example illustrates the reason why I always approach every project in Marvelous Designer by first setting up a rigged character and saving my bind pose. The potential of this feature and workflow is limitless. If you are working on a project where you have pre-existing animations such as walk cycles, run cycles or hero attack animations, you can load these poses in as .pos files, simulate your garments to these poses and once done, solidify and reload your bind pose. Other use cases are bending elbows or knees during simulation to get folds with better articulation around joints, or when working on accessories such as gloves, etc. This wraps up how I start and prepare my Marvelous Designer scene before every project and a use case example of my workflow when working with MD. The Making of “Warrior of The East” Part 1

In the previous sections of this series I went over my process for creating the leather tasset for “Warrior of The East” project. We drafted the patterns, adjusted the shape to match the reference, added all the detailing work and seams inside Marvelous Designer and now we are ready to export the garment. At this stage our simulation should be finalized at our final particle distance (PD of 4 in my case). As you may remember we have multiple layers of patterns sewed to each other to achieve the desired results. However we do not need to export all the patterns, we will only be exporting the outermost layers as indicated in the image below. <img src="https://storagefiles.clo-set.com/public/community/202603/f7852253683145d6badf6aaf343e7cd3/images/2bdb0cf6dcd3455dbb9efb8d289169001.jpg" alt="2bdb0cf6dcd3455dbb9efb8d28916900" class="custom-image original-size" data-id="2bdb0cf6dcd3455dbb9efb8d28916900" data-width="3837" data-height="2080"> Select the desired patterns to export, go to File Export OBJ (Selected). The export settings are very important here, ensure the follow settings are selected: - Single Object - Unwelded - Thin - Unified UV Coordinates - Units CM (This should match whatever unit settings you used to import your avatar) Once the garments have been exported, you can import it to your modeling/sculpting software of choice for further detailing. In this case we will be going over my process in preparing the garment for sculpting in Zbrush. <img src="https://storagefiles.clo-set.com/public/community/202603/f7852253683145d6badf6aaf343e7cd3/images/aecb10ee530c4246ad278405cc9579822.jpg" alt="aecb10ee530c4246ad278405cc957982" class="custom-image original-size" data-id="aecb10ee530c4246ad278405cc957982" data-width="3837" data-height="2080"> Once the garments have been exported, you can import it to your modeling/sculpting software of choice for further detailing. In this case we will be going over my process in preparing the garment for sculpting in Zbrush. Open Zbrush and import the OBJ file we created. You should have the asset loaded in zbrush in this state: <img src="https://storagefiles.clo-set.com/public/community/202603/f7852253683145d6badf6aaf343e7cd3/images/5020d453580e4e2a89eacf7548b3b48d3.jpg" alt="5020d453580e4e2a89eacf7548b3b48d" class="custom-image original-size" data-id="5020d453580e4e2a89eacf7548b3b48d" data-width="3838" data-height="2082"> Use Zbrush’s Auto Groups functions to create a polygroup per separate element of the mesh. <img src="https://storagefiles.clo-set.com/public/community/202603/f7852253683145d6badf6aaf343e7cd3/images/3d007ab60ff44b78b4861883be8c9ee24.jpg" alt="3d007ab60ff44b78b4861883be8c9ee2" class="custom-image original-size" data-id="3d007ab60ff44b78b4861883be8c9ee2" data-width="3834" data-height="2155"> Now we will start with the leather segment (purple in screenshot above). Isolate that polygroup and click on Split Hidden. Once you have the leather border as a separate subtool, select it and use Zremesher using the following settings : <img src="https://storagefiles.clo-set.com/public/community/202603/f7852253683145d6badf6aaf343e7cd3/images/51847c41c21544a7a349f4ac36d776475.jpg" alt="51847c41c21544a7a349f4ac36d77647" class="custom-image original-size" data-id="51847c41c21544a7a349f4ac36d77647" data-width="3835" data-height="2155"> Now use the Zmodeler brush in FACE mode using the settings shown in the image below to add thickness to the leather border of the tasset. <img src="https://storagefiles.clo-set.com/public/community/202603/f7852253683145d6badf6aaf343e7cd3/images/1bf0085c4b524504b9daee35c87883736.jpg" alt="1bf0085c4b524504b9daee35c8788373" class="custom-image original-size" data-id="1bf0085c4b524504b9daee35c8788373" data-width="3835" data-height="2155"> Repeat the same process for all the remaining polygroups, then proceed with subdividing all the subtools a few times. They are now ready for sculpting. Using a combi nation of Standard, Dem-Standard, Smooth, Clay and Clay Build-Up Brushes inside Zbrush I proceeded to add all the details, wear and tear and a few leather details using a basic leather alpha.
